Thus feeling against Tom Willsher was very great and it is not clear how he dominated old William Thrale so completely. There is also the old hearsay family tale of how a hoard of spade guineas were found in the chimney of the Maltings, which of course only the Wilshers knew the final destiny. The Meadow referred to is supposedly an area of land once known locally as Thrale's Meadow. The executor's final account of William's estate makes interesting reading: outstanding income tax was one guinea: yet he owed £35 for meat to the still existing firm of G. Simons, an extraordinarily high figure, especially when one considers the servant's wages of 3/6d per week which are also mentioned!
Rent was received from the Lattimores who lived next door for the use of the Barns. The adjacent house is still called Lattimores, and of course belonged to the same family who were concerned in the shooting of the Bengal tiger on No Mans Land.
With the death of Norman in 1900 at Wheathampstead, where he lies buried with his brothers, the Thrale ceased to be farmers, brewers and millers. Norman's two sons and seven daughters were wide-ranging in ages, some born at Wheathampstead, others at Hertford. One of the youngest was Ralph, and in consequence found himself a gunner in Flanders during the first World War. From 1914 onwards he survived the horrors of trench warfare; in 1918 he was sent to a rest camp in Northern Italy. Whilst there one sole enemy aircraft attacked the area, loosed one sole bomb killing one sole man, Ralph.
