Miller. He was the last miller of three generations, following in his father Thomas and grandfather Ralph's footsteps. Sometime after his wife died in 1884 he returned to his native village of Wheathampstead and worked principally at the Wheathampstead Mill of the Titmuss family. He was considered one of the best millers - and even by that time - very rarely found - stone dressers of the old grinding stones. One had to crawl between the round stone grinding slabs and then chip away new channels in the stone.
