assulting John Hollingsworth at the County Sessions, and in 1813 was called upon to answer a further endictment. He was obviously a rather unruly character. He must have given his poor wife a very difficult time, and as we shall see later this had unfortunate effects upon her temper. This wayward behaviour was no doubt the cause of Ralph being named as a highwayman in 1792, but then cleared of the charge. In a contemporary newspaper published in Berkhamsted called the Bucks, Beds and Hertfordshire Paper, sold for 3½d, there appeared the following item under the heading 'False Accusation' and read: 'I, Thomas Neyler, postillion to Edward Waller of Watford, Herts., do publicly acknowledge that I falsely accused Mr. Ralph Thrale of Wheathampstead Mill, Herts, and Mr. John Smith of the parish of Ellesborough Bucks., of being the two highwaymen who committed a robbery on Bushey Heath, near Stanmore; signed at Watford on 11th February 1793' (26) Bushey Heath was a then favourite haunt of highwaymen, and it was fortunate that Ralph was cleared of the charge for only nine years later Robert Snooks was captured holding up the mail, hanged and buried at the road side near Bushey. One is also reminded of an earlier era when the 'Wicked Lady Ferrers' of Markyate took to highway robbery and received, so it is said, wounds at Nomansland which proved fatal. For this reason the old Park Hotel at Nomansland (formerly the King William) was in 1970 renamed the 'Wicked Lady' by the brewers. The newspaper declaration also proves Ralph to have been milling at Wheathampstead Mill about which more will be related shortly, and where his descendents were to be millers after him.
Ralph's son Thomas was born at Wheathampstead in 1801, and later Sarah was born in 1805 and Mary in 1839. Sarah Thrale later married John Wilshere and Mary John Sibley and from that time on these two Wheathampstead families were deeply involved in the affairs of the Wheathampstead Thrales.
Thomas Thrale moved from Wheathampstead for a time, for his father Ralph had died at a fairly early age, and Thomas like his father had become a miller. In 1823 he had married Sarah Thorpe at St. Marylebone in London. He then went to Luton where his three children were born, baptismal entries in the Luton Parish Church registers being 1826 for Thomas, 1829 for William and 1832 for Norman. There is also an entry for Mary Ann in 1830 but she must regrettably have died at a young age. Also like his father, Thomas died young in 1840 at the age of 39 at Wheathampstead.
