- Dunkirk was the scene of the historic evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from France from 26 May to 4 June 1940. Louis Bloch Private 5340010 4th Bn., Royal Berkshire Regiment was killed in action on Sunday 26th May 1940 on the first day of the evacuation of Dunkirk.
There was a family verbal account that Louis was killed aged 18 having lied about his age so he could enlist without obtaining his parents' consent. This account is untrue, as he was about 22 year of age when he was killed.
