Thrali gentil, che qual Astro ridente
Sei dell'; Anglio Ciel gloria e splendore,
E qual novello albor dal Mar sorgente
Tanta luce diffonde e tanto Onore'
Che col tuo sguardo, e col tuo dolce riso,
Fai sì che'l mondo in Paradiso ei sia;
E se tu parli, ogni terrestre viso
Si turba, e perde la sua luce pria.
E se tu canti, o se tu balli, o cianci,
Ogni alma sente un'eccelso piacer;
Nè che'l tuo volto mai si possa oscurare;
Ma fia che sempre al mondo si ringioia
Il nome tuo, la tua beltà rara.
English translation
Thrale, the fair, who like a smiling star
Art England's sky's sole glory and delight,
And like a morning's blush, that comes afar,
Do'st spread so much of honour and of light,
That with thy look, and with thy gentle smile,
Thou mak'st the world a Paradise appear;
And if thou speak'st, each earthly face turns pale,
And loses its own light, and looks so clear.
And if thou sing'st, or if thou dance, or play,
Each soul feels an inexpressible joy:
And if thou write'st, the Heavens themselves would stay,
And send their ink and paper to employ.
And if thou think'st, what sublime things thou find'st
In thy fair breast, my beautiful Thrale!
And if thou lovest, what happy roses thou bind'st,
And what a happy bed dost thou make whole!
Therefore thy name shall never die
Nor shall thy lovely face be ever dark;
But thy renown shall still make glad the sky,
And thy rare beauty shall the world embark.
Verses: "Thrali gentil"
Hester Lynch Thrale née Salusbury. Thraliana. 12 February 1771.
In Thraliana she described it as a “little song” for her husband. Written when she was most infatuated with him. The poem expresses admiration and affection, reflecting the way Hester Thrale often wrote about him, praising his intelligence, wit and kindness. It was later also included in the 1781 collection Miscellanies in Prose and Verse. Although published anonymously, the poems in the volume are widely accepted as her work.
