Albert ABRAHAMS British military WWII service card

Herbert ABRAHAMS used the name Bert or Herbert WELLS to conceal his Jewish identity. Thus, there is some uncertainty about whether this military record refers to him or to another individual.

Served in the Royal Engineers during the Second World War, primarily with the 556th Field Company, which was part of the 76th Infantry Division, a British Army formation raised in 1942 and primarily responsible for home defence and training.

Records indicate several changes in posting and administrative status, including entries on the “Y List,” a designation used for personnel who were temporarily 'non-effective', often due to medical or administrative reasons.

On 19 September 1943, the soldier was posted to ITBRE, the Infantry Training Battalion of the Royal Engineers.
