LORDS OF THE MANOR OF SANDRIDGE
(Shown in capital letters)APPENDIX 3
Authorities and Abbreviations
The main authorities for the period 796 to 1539 are the records of St. Albans Abbey, which were edited by H.T. Riley for the Master of the Rolls 1876-1873. They are:
- GESTA ABBATUM MONASTERII SANCTI ALBANI 793 to 1411. Compiled by Thomas Walshingham. Three volumes, abbreviated GESTA.
- CHRONICON RERUM GESTARUM IN MONASTERIO S. ALBANI 1422-1431. Compiled by an unknown author.
- ANNALES MONASTERII SANCTI ALBANI 1423-1440 by John Amundesham, monk.
- REGISTRUM ABBATIAE, Johannis Whethamstede 1451-1464.
- REGISTRUM ABBATIAE, Willelmi Alban 1465-1472.
- REGISTRUM ABBATIAE, Willelmi Walingforde 1476-1487. These three registers, together with five appendices, are in two volumes, abbreviated Registrum 1 and 2.
The main authority for the history of the church is the church itself. The following are some of the papers which have been written about it:
- SANDRIDGE CHURCH by Somers Clarke, F.S.A., Archaeological Journal, Vo1.42, 1885, pages 247-50, abbreviated SOMERS CLARKE.
- THE PARISH CHURCH OF ST. LEONARD'S, SANDRIDGE. Read in 1885 by John Griffith, Vicar.
- SOME DATES IN THE HISTORY OF ST. LEONARD'S CHURCH, SANDRIDGE. Read in 1900 by J. A. Cruikshank; Vicar.
These two papers were published by The St. Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society, in their TRANSACTIONS 1903-4, pages 33-45. References to these transactions have been abbreviated ST.A.A.S. with the date.
- THE HISTORY OF SANDRIDGE CHURCH by H.R. Wilton-Hall. This has only appeared in instalments in the Sandridge Magazine from the years 1911 to 1915 and again from 1932 to 1935. It is by far the fullest account of the church that has been yet written. The author is interested not only in the church itself but in the clergy and other officers. He draws his information for the latter period from the Records of the Archdeaconry of St. Albans, only a few of which have been published. But his account ends at the year 1801.
- SANDRIDGE CHURCH by C.H. Ashdown, F.R.G.S., in the Sandridge Magazine, March 1915. References to the Sandridge Magazine are abbreviated S.M.
- SANDRIDGE CHURCH by H. C. Andrews, F.S.A., 1932, abbreviated ANDREWS. This paper is perhaps the most learned of all, and the most readable, but it has never been published.
Three other important works are:
- THE VICTORIA COUNTY HISTORY OF HERTFORDSHIRE, abbreviated V.C.H. There is a short history of Sandridge in the second volume.
- RECORDS OF THE OLD ARCHDEACONRY OF ST. ALBANS 1575-1637. Compiled by H. R. Wilton-Hall, published by ST.A. A.S. 1908, abbreviated R.O.A.
- RECORD OF THE HERTFORD COUNTY SESSIONS. Nine volumes edited by W.J. Hardy, F.S.A, and Colonel William Le Hardy, M.C., F.S.A., abbreviated COUNTY SESSIONS.
Lastly there is Edward Steele who visited Sandridge in 1715. His notes about the Church are in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, (Gough Herts MSS4), abbreviated STEELE MS.
