Thrale history

A chronicle of the Thrale family of Hertfordshire by Richard William Thrale (1931-2007), building on the Thrale chapter from the 1952 book Historic Sandridge. Reproduced in full with consent of the author.

and Henry Thrale in St. Leonard's, Streatham. The saltire cross on azure are the Arms of the Abbots of St. Albans, and it was from the same source that the City of St. Albans adopted its Arms. The pheons or broad arrows are a reference to the legendary history of Princess Elizabeth. Likewise in the Crest the oak tree fructed or is the same as borne by John and Henry Thrale. Thus one can observe in the great southern window of the Waterend Barn four blazons, the left one of the Jennings family, the middle left of the Brocket family, the middle right of the City, and on the right hand side that of the Thrales. During the 1920's a name competition was held by Marshall Hall, K.C.,M.P., The object was to fill in the name of L--- Т-——, using a Christian name and a surname well-known to English speaking people, but most rarely borne. The successful competitor suggested Luke Thrale. After a brief description of the Streatham branch of the family, Marshall Hall terminated with the query 'What has become of the Thrales?' It is hoped that this chronicle will provide an adequate response.
