lay sick, straw was scattered over the road to deaden the noise. There was also so much dust during the summer that water carts had to be continually used to dampen the road surface. During the summer, many a circus was held on Cock Meadow in the Hatfield Road opposite Sarah's almhouses, and processions with gaudy floats made a tour of the City. Skating took place during the winters at Worley's being two long ponds on the Sopwell Estate near to the mill. An essential of life were the tallow dips made by the tallow chandler at the top of George Street, the greasy smell made by the cotton wicks being particularly obnoxious. The City Band, still in existence, played often, especially at summer dances held on the lawns of prominent citizens' houses, decorations being provided by Chinese lanterns and small coloured jars with night lights burning inside. Later the Poly Cinema in London Road gave entertainment accompanied by a one-man band. The old County Hall Theatre behind what is now Marks and Spencer provided contemporary drama with audiences hissing when the villain entered. Farming, strawhat making and printing provided much of the employment in the area, the wives of working men making plait from the straw outside their front doors. Men wore the Norfolk jacket, narrow trousers and the straw hat with an attached cord. German bands, the organ grinder with his monkey, boys shouting 'hot rolls!' , the muffin man with his head tray and bell, and the lamplighter with his long pole, were constant sights.
The Saturday Market continued on until ten o'clock at night, the illumination of the stalls throwing a glow over the whole area. Many stalls provided food such as the whelk and hot pea stall, the peas being in a large cauldron with an open fire underneath. Hot sausage and bread cost one penny served by a fine looking fellow in top hat and white apron. The scent of malt was strong; Adey & White's Brewery was situated in Chequer Street, and Bingham's in Branch Road. The City was developing towards Marshalswick Park, St. Peters Park and Sandpit Lane being built upon. One of the present-day Thrales resides in the old St. Peters Park. The houses immediately to the north of Sandpit Lane were specificaly built to house servants to the large houses in St. Peters Park. Wages were ten shillings a month, and the servants had to provide their own uniform. Now the old large houses are disappearing to be replaced by flat units of a high density, whilst the former servants' houses are becoming more and more sought after.
