Tree: UK Thrale family

Notes:

A historical form of charitable housing for the poor, elderly, or disabled, the Thrale Almshouses were established by the four daughters of Henry and Hester Thrale:

Originally located at 103-105 Streatham High Road in 1832, they were rebuilt in 1930 at 27 Polworth Road, Streatham, Surrey and modernised and expanded in 2015.

1939

After Lady Edith Robinson, wife of the Streatham Conservative Association, passed away in 1939, £1,000 was raised to honour her memory. This funded the construction of two additional almshouses at the Polworth Road site.

2015

By 2015, the original 10 homes from the 1930s were outdated and no longer suited to modern living. The Thrale Almshouse & Relief in Need charity launched a £3m redevelopment, creating 17 modernised and new homes around an enclosed garden, tailored for women over 60 with strong ties to Streatham’s ancient parish.

The side wings, housing eight of the original almshouses, were retained, upgraded, and extended. The central block was demolished and replaced with a new building containing three almshouses, while a new block of six almshouses was added to the previously open fourth side, completing the courtyard.
