Salusbury ownership
The Bachymbyd estate was owned by the Salusbury family from the 16th century until the 1860s. It was originally owned by John Salusbury (c. 1470-1537), the fourth son of Thomas Salusbury of Lleweni. John Salusbury’s son, Piers Salusbury (c. 1495-1555), married Margaret Wen, the heiress of Rug Hall in Merionethshire. As a result of this marriage, the Salusbury family acquired the Rug estate, which became their main seat. However, the Bachymbyd estate remained an important part of the Salusbury family’s holdings. The Bachymbyd estate passed down through the Salusbury family for generations, including John Salusbury, Hester Lynch Thrale née Salusbury, her adopted son Sir John Salusbury Piozzi Salusbury, and his son John Arthur Salusbury (1821-1877).
Sale
John Arthur Salusbury sold the estate in the 1860s. The estate has since been divided among several different owners.Sometimes known as Bachymbyd Fawr, which translates to “Bachymbyd the Great”.
