Agency: Park Hospital |
- Died aged 2½ years, after tonsillectomy surgery, from bronchopneumonia following measles, with septic scarlet fever contributing.
According to family accounts, he suffered from impetigo, and his fatal illness began after the tonsillectomy operation. According to oral family accounts, it may have been complicated by the accidental failure to remove all surgical items — though this cannot be definitively confirmed. Before antibiotics, post-surgical measles infection was a recognised risk, and the tonsillectomy site may have allowed scarlet fever (Group A Strep) to enter, leading to sepsis.
In 1936 Park Hospital was a 632-bed specialist 'fever hospital'. It seems likely that he was transferred here from the hospital at which the tonsillectomy was undertaken. [1]
