INTRODUCTION
to
A New Thraliana 1973
In September 1776 Henry Thrale of Streatham gave to his wife Hester six imposing quarto volumes, the covers of undressed calf and the pages blank. On each was displayed the title Thraliana stamped on gold upon a red label. By filling these blank pages with most erudite literature, Hester Lynch Thrale entered the realms of immortality, sharing it with her devoted friend Samuel Johnson and some of their contemporaries. Yet Hester's Thraliana could not record that which she did not know, and this New Thraliana attempts to rectify this omission in history by telling the tale of a yeoman Hertfordshire family and of the people amongst whom they have dwelt for centuries.

INTRODUCTION
to
A Newer Thraliana in 2005
After the passing of just about a generation, it would seem timely to carry the Chronicle on into the twenty-first century by expanding and lengthening the original text. The first objective has been to record facts. To avoid excessive digression various jottings have been appended. It is for others in the future, perhaps another generation, to extend the family tale.
