Thrale history

Kingsbury, St Albans, Hertfordshire, England

Tree: UK Thrale family

Notes:

In the 18th century, Kingsbury Manor was owned by the Smith family, who were linked to the Thrale family through marriage.
  1. Richard Smith (d.1772), bought lease in 1716;
  2. son Ralph Smith (1727-1800), inherited in 1772;
  3. son Stephan Smith, inherited in 1800;
  4. son Stephan Smith jr, inherited in 1828 & sold the lease in 1846.

A New Thraliana (page 96) states that Richard Thrale (c.1688-1755) occupied Kingsbury from 1735 to 1753. However, his place within the above succession of ownership is uncertain.

The estate of Kingsbury Manor, located near St Albans, holds significant historical and genealogical interest, especially for the Smith family. The manor’s early ownership traces back to the Abbey of St Albans, with the land granted to the Abbey in 1199. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539, it became royal property and was later leased to various individuals, including Thomas Wendye, a royal physician.

In the 17th century, the manor was owned by the Wendye family and later sold to Sir Harbottle Grimston of Gorhambury in 1657. In 1716, Richard Smith of Maynes began leasing the property, with his son Ralph Smith inheriting it after he died in 1772. The Smith family, particularly Ralph Smith, were deeply connected to Kingsbury Manor for generations. Ralph Smith’s connection to the manor was well-documented in “The Gentleman” magazine upon his death in 1800, noting his relationship with prominent families such as the Thrales and Halseys.

The Smith family continued their association with Kingsbury Manor until 1846, when financial difficulties faced by Stephan Smith and his son, Stephan Jr., led to their departure.

The manor underwent several ownership changes, and by 2004, the land was redeveloped into Kingsbury Mews, with a few buildings still retaining their historical ties to the original manor.
