NEWMARKET TOWN PLATE
Trainer's Daughter Rides Winner of Historic Race
Miss Thrale daughter of the West Horsiey trainer, P. Thrale, today won the Newmarket Town Plate, about 4m, on Jimmy's Pet by a head from Eastern Loveliness, who was ridden by Miss P. Monckton.
Ten lengths away. Caliph of Bagdad, the mount of Miss Audrey Bell, who had won the face three times in the previous four years was third.
The other runners. Primitive (Mrs. Verrall, Wily Bird (Miss "Bobby" Nicholson). Grey Warrior (Mr. L. Coveil), and Leonore(Miss Orr), were a long way behind. The winner started at 2 to 1.
The finish was a most exciting one, as Miss Thrale, after looking to be an easy winner. had to withstand a terrific challenge from Miss Monckton.
Eastern Loveliness drew level a few yards from the post, but Jimmy's Pet came again to gain the judge's verdict.
The Newmarket Town Plate was Instituted in 1666 by Charles Il to commemorate his accession. One of the conditions was that it was to be run on the second Thursday in October for ever.
