EAST HYDE, BEDFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
Tree: UK Thrale family
Notes:
Following the death of her first husband, Sir Thomas Cotton, in 1715, Lady Cotton utilised the inheritance from her father, Sir Thomas Lynch, — who had enriched himself through the exploitation of enslaved African people on Jamaican plantations — to purchase the estate and construct the present house at East Hyde.
In 1725, the house and estate were sold to Dr. John Bettesworth. On his death in 1751, it passed to his daughter Frances who married slave-owning Robert Hibbert (1717-1784). Their son (and slaver) Robert Hibbert (1750–1835) inherited.
In 1833, Levi Ames of Ayot St Lawrence purchased the estate and significantly enlarged the house. His son, Lionel Ames, took up residence in 1835. Lionel served as a Colonel with the 17th Lancers and later became a magistrate for Bedfordshire, eventually chairing the Luton Division Petty Sessions. He was also Chairman of the Trustees of Luton Savings Bank and Director of the Hertford, Welwyn, Luton, and Dunstable Railway.
Following Lionel Ames's death in 1873, the estate changed hands several times. By 1920, Sir John Harrington owned East Hyde, and upon his death in 1925, Charles Thomas Hambros acquired the property. The Hambros family maintained ownership into the late 20th century, with David Hambros and his wife Helen residing there as of 1975.
