Boys' School, Streatham, Surrey, England

Tree: UK Thrale family

Notes:

North of The Shrubbery in Streatham once stood The White Lion, an ancient inn founded as early as 1507. In later years, the building and its adjoining structures served several community purposes, including use as a schoolroom and as the vestry for the parish of St Leonard’s, Streatham.

Almost opposite the White Lion lay land owned by Henry Thrale, the brewer and long-standing resident of Streatham Park. On this property, near the corner of Wells Lane, stood a row of cottages, one of which was adapted for use as a small boys’ school.

The school was originally run by Dr Thomas in the early 1770s. It catered to boys under the age of twelve and provided an elementary classical education typical of a local preparatory establishment of the period. Following Dr Thomas’s tenure, the school was taken over by the Rev. Reynold Davies, curate of St Leonard’s Church, Streatham.

Davies appears in parish and archival records from the early nineteenth century described as "proprietor of a private school at Streatham". His position as both cleric and schoolmaster reflects the dual educational and ecclesiastical role common among Anglican clergy of that era. The property was built upon Thrale-owned ground opposite the White Lion and extending towards Wells Lane.
